A commission investigating the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, concluded on Friday that local law enforcement officers should have taken the gunman, Robert R. Card II, into custody and seized his weapons before he killed 18 people on Oct. 25. The decision to instead give Mr. Card’s family responsibility for removing his weapons was “an abdication of law enforcement’s responsibility,” the commission wrote in its 30-page interim report, intended to provide early findings to legislators who are weighing several proposals for changes to the state’s gun laws, spurred by the events. The local sheriff’s department had “sufficient probable cause” to take Mr. Card into custody and remove his weapons because of a “likelihood of serious harm,” the commission said in its report. CNN —The CEO of a major Nigerian bank, along with his wife and son, were among six people killed in a helicopter crash in the Mojave Desert near the California-Nevada border late Friday night, according to a World Trade Organization official. Both of the helicopter’s pilots were also killed, according to authorities. The aircraft, which was operated by California-based charter company Orbic Air, took off around 8:45 p.m. PT and crashed just after 10 p.m. near Interstate 15 in Halloran Springs, California, Graham said. The NTSB is investigating the cause of the crash and was on the scene in Halloran Springs, California, Saturday night collecting evidence, Graham said at a news conference. CNN —Los Angeles County has agreed to pay $700,000 to a public radio reporter who was slammed to the ground and arrested by sheriff’s deputies while covering a protest in 2020. According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Coroner’s division online records, Ellingson died on Sunday. Ellingson starred in the movie alongside Abigail Breslin, Jason Patric and Cameron Diaz. (AP) — A Missouri prosecutor has dropped and refiled the murder case against Pamela Hupp, a killing that inspired a TV miniseries. Lincoln County Prosecuting Attorney Mike Wood charged Hupp with first-degree murder in July 2021, accusing her of killing her friend, Betsy Faria, a decade earlier. The original case had been moved on a change of venue to Springfield, about four hours away from Lincoln County. The Faria case was the subject of an NBC miniseries last year, “The Thing About Pam,” which starred Renee Zellweger. In that case, Hupp staged a fake kidnapping to divert attention from herself in a reinvestigation of the Faria killing, prosecutors said.
